The incidents this past weekend at two Duke Energy substations in Moore County, NC highlights the vulnerabilities that critical infrastructure nationwide face from vandals, thieves and terrorism.
According to the News & Observer, "Widespread power outages caused by vandalism of electrical substations in Moore County continued on Sunday, with electricity shut off to nearly all residences and businesses, and estimates for restoration of power stretching possibly into Thursday, officials say. The outages are the result of intentional damage by firearms to two substations in the county, according to Moore County and Duke Energy officials."

Situational awareness refers to the knowledge and environmental understanding that allows operators to make correct decisions in complex situations. Good situational awareness means operators understand what’s going on around them, along with the impact of their actions. They can gather information effectively, assess abnormal situations and quickly take corrective action if needed.
Situational awareness is important to the overall success of a control room. Operators with poor situational awareness are more likely to make potentially disastrous mistakes.
An ill-equipped or distracted operator who makes the wrong decision at a critical time can cause harm to coworkers, the surrounding community, or the environment.
Situational awareness is impacted by many factors including lighting, sound, and ergonomics. However, situational awareness supported by ergonomics starts and stops at the operator’s console and chair.

Exit Watch delayed egress maglocks are UL listed and available in a range of models to meet NFPA, BOCA and local AHJ requirements. They also feature heavy-duty construction, 1,200 lbs. holding force, and the option for voice or sounder annunciation with an LED visual count-down timer.
Delayed egress magnetic locks are supported with a range of mounting accessories, including spacer bars and L brackets. CX-DE1200 Exit Watch maglocks are also supported with a range of system accessories, including sounders, speakers, remote key switches, instructional signs, and moutning plates/brackets.
